Markham indicates that he would be glad to have Mighels dedicate a book to him and is enclosing a line to Mighels' publishing house. A postscript indicates he is looking forward to seeing "you two" before they go "westward."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
